Five essential apps which will boost stock Android KitKat experience on your Nexus 5 or other Nexus devices (Nexus 4, Nexus 7 etc). If you are not new to Android like me and already have used some other Android phone which was not running on stock Android. Then it might be the case you may missing some features of your old Android phone while using Nexus 5 or say Nexus 4.
Here I wanna mention that I was using Samsung Galaxy Note before Nexus 5. When I start using Nexus 5, I realize that I am missing some features of Samsung Galaxy Note, it may happen to you also. Following five apps are free alternative of the features that you might be missing on your Nexus 5.
Apps You Must Have on Nexus 5 or other Nexus Devices
First app on my list is File Manager. Nexus Devices with Stock Android do not have File Manager.
1. ES File Explorer
Basically it is a file manager app for your phone storage. On home page of app you can see data storage used and space available, category wise number of files like I have 423 pictures, 145 music files, 87 videos, 95 apps etc. You can browse these category wise files directly from home page itself.
- Browse Files, Folders on phone storage
- Can search, share, copy, move and compress files
- Various files/folders views styles
- Can sort files/folders by name, date, type, size
- Can integrate cloud accounts like DropBox, Google Drive etc.
- Supports multi windows
Using ES File Explorer you can also access storage, files and folder which are shared over your Wi-Fi network while phone is connected to same Wi-Fi network. Best thing about ES File Manager is that its a free app and there are no annoying ads.

Second app on the list is Voice Recorder. Smart Voice Recorder is in the race because of its tiny size and fairly good voice quality.
2. Smart Voice Recorder
I wanna make it clear that this app does not record your conversation during phone call, but it is a voice recording app. Thought there are not so many settings in Smart Voice Recorder but one of its features, Skip Silence is my favorite one. When you enable Skip Silence option, app will not record for silence during recording. I find this feature really useful when you are recording podcasts on your phone.
- Good quality voice recording
- Skip silence feature
- Various sample rate (voice quality) options
- Microphone calibration
Third app on list is LED Torch app. On my old Samsung Galaxy Note, there was a torch widget. But on Nexus 5 there is no torch widget or app.
3. Nexus Flashlight
If you use camera flash as torch then this little app is for you. App simply utilize camera LED flash light to use it as torch. You can add home screen widget (adjustable in size) for direct ON/OFF control of torch functionality. It is an ad free app. If you wanna have some variety of features in torch app. Check out alternative app mentioned below.
- Auto off time out setting
- Clean interface
- Beautiful, adjustable in size widget
- Ad fee app
Fourth app on my list is Wi-Fi Data Transfer app. Although you can share files between phone and computer using bluetooth. But it is very time consuming when files are bulky in size.
AirDroid is power packed with many features, you can transfer data like files, folders between phone and computer over Wi-Fi. Using AirDroid you can access most of features and data of your phone from computer over Wi-Fi. You can dial and receive calls, send and read messages from your computer.
- File transfer over Wi-Fi or web
- Data and Apps accessibility from computer
- App manager
- Device info, instantly release memory by killing unwanted tasks
- Running tasks information
- Ad free full version app
- Instant memory releasing
Last app on the list is Dictionary app. This app can make your day if you use dictionary app on phone. Check out features of this dictionary app, you will love it.
It is a free offline dictionary and thesaurus app with text pronunciations. Approximately one-tenth of three millions words, phrases and derivatives are covered by WordWeb.
