What is Base64 encoding?
Base64 encodes binary data (like an image file) into a plain ASCII string using 64 printable characters. This lets you embed images directly in HTML, CSS, JSON, or XML without needing a separate file request.
When should you use it?
Data URIs are ideal for small icons, logos, or critical above-the-fold images where eliminating an HTTP request improves load time. Avoid for large images — Base64 adds ~33% overhead to file size.
Supported formats
JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP, SVG, BMP, TIFF, ICO. Maximum file size: 10 MB. All processing happens in your browser — your image is never uploaded to a server.
How to use the Data URI
In HTML: <img src="data:image/png;base64,…">
In CSS: background-image: url("data:image/png;base64,…");
The image loads instantly with no extra network request.
